United Democratic Front (UDF) vice-president Iqbar Omar says he does not expect to be an automatic running mate for Atupele Muluzi in the May 2014 presidential race.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday after a rally he addressed at Area 36 in Lilongwe, Omar said he will not be disappointed if Muluzi chooses another person as running mate.

Omar said: “The powers to choose a running mate is with the president [Atupele Muluzi]; hence, like any Malawian I am waiting with interest to hear him announcing his running mate any time soon.

“Being the vice-president of this party does not mean I am an automatic running mate. I do not consider myself as one among the four people that Muluzi is scrutinising for the running mate position.”

He said he has been a hard worker for UDF since he joined the party and will continue to do so.

“Whether Muluzi chooses me or somebody else, I will continue working hard and being loyal to this party. This is the party that is fully prepared to move the Malawi nation forward in terms of development considering the developments it initiated when it was in power [1994-2004],” said Omar.

Asked whether he will contest again for the parliamentary seat in Lilongwe City South constituency where he lost during the 2009 general elections, Omar said he will not stand again, as he wants to pave the way for newcomers.

He said he will support anyone who wins primary elections to represent UDF in the tripartite elections.
